NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – DIPLOMATS in Kenya have denounced the murder of a senior official of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s (IEBC) ahead of elections next Tuesday.
Christopher Msando, IEBC Systems Development Manager, was earlier this week found dead in the central Kikuyu with one of his arms cut off.
He had been missing since last Friday days after reporting death threats from unknown tormentors.
Former colonial master United Kingdom and United States have expressed grave concern at the murder.
Nic Hailey, the UK High Commissioner, and US Ambassador Robert Godec, said it was critical that Kenya held free, fair, credible and peaceful
“The protection for IEBC staff is essential to achieving this goal,” the diplomats jointly stated.
They welcomed pledges by the government of President Uhuru Kenyatta to investigate the murder.
“We have offered our assistance in the investigation.”
No arrests had been made at the time of publication.
The murder of Msando is the latest in a series of politically-motivated killings in the run-up to the polls the East African country is organising.
Ethnic clashes have also marred preparations for polls set to be a two-horse race between Kenyatta and long-time rival, Raila Odinga.
The killings have evoked memories of the deadly violence that followed general elections held in 2007/08.
Over 1 500 civilians were killed and 600 000 people displaced.
