GABORONE, (CAJ News) – NEW Botswana president Mokgweetsi Masisi is making his maiden trip to Zimbabwe in a move anticipated to normalise relations between the neighbouring countries.

The meeting with Zimbabwean counterpart, Emmerson Mnangagwa, in the capital Harare on Monday will be the highlight of a regional tour that comes days after the former succeeded Ian Khama as head of state.

“The working visit will serve to deepen and broaden the scope of bilateral co-operation between Botswana and Zimbabwe. It is expected that the two leaders will also discuss regional, continental and global issues of mutual concern,” the Botswana foreign ministry stated.

Minister of International Affairs and Co-operation, Vincent Seretse, and Minister of Transport and Communications, Onkokame Kitso Mokaila, will accompany Masisi on the one-day visit to Zimbabwe.

After Harare, Masisi will visit Namibia where he will meet with his counterpart President Hage Geingob.

Botswana’s fifth president will also visit Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa and Zambia in an effort to strengthen ties with fellow Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states.

Botswana enjoys cordial relations with regional countries except Zimbabwe following diplomatic rows over the past decade with Khama and Zimbabwean rival Robert Mugabe in power.
