ABUJA – SOME 500 inmates have been freed in northern Nigeria as part of efforts to decongest prisons in the West African country.

President Muhamadu Buhari presided over an event that saw the release of the prisoners in the most populous state of Kano.

The inmates granted pardon were drawn from various prisons in the state.

“Prison reforms and decongestion will be pursued with greater vigour by our administration,” Buhari said.

He was speaking at the Kurmawa Central Prison, which has about 1 400 inmates in contrast to the established capacity of 750.

Buhari lamented that some of the inmates were teenagers.

He raised concern that without proper training behind bars, their future would be wrecked.

“We will invest more in education and vocational training,” the president said.

Buhari meanwhile said his administration would sustain the fight against corruption and the Boko Haram terror group.
