Zim government, Econet headed for collision

HARARE – ZIMBABWE’S government is accusing the country’s largest network operator of defying laws prompting companies in the sector to share
infrastructure usage.
Minister of Information Communication Technology (ICT), Supa Mandiwanzira, leveled the accusations against the privately-owned Econet Wireless.
He argued this hindered efforts to increase connectivity.
“They (Econet) have not been very open” Mandiwanzira said.
“From what we understand, to sharing their infrastructure without receiving something from who they want to share with. So what they are insisting on is if you want to put your infrastructure on our tower, you must offer your tower so we put our infrastructure there.”
Government has gazetted alaw prompting the three mobile network operators and state-owned fibre operator, TelOne, to share infrastructure.
Government owns Econet’s rivals, NetOne and Telecel.
The two companies have not invested significantly in infrastructure such as towers and masts.
