Zimbabwean woman faces slavery probe in US

HARARE, (CAJ News) A Zimbabwean-American woman is under investigation in the United States for allegedly exploiting a national from her home country by confiscating her travel documents and subjecting her to slavery.

Shingaizdo Nhekairo, aged 49,faces ten years in prison after the US
District Court of Maryland charged her with one count of “alien harboring
for financial gain and one count of unlawful conduct with respect to
immigration documents.”

According to the indictment, between 2006 and 2014, the defendant harbored the victim and concealed her immigration status for purposes of financial gain.

It is alleged she confiscated the victim’s passport to maintain her labuor
and services.

The crime of unlawful conduct with respect to immigration documents
carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison and requires mandatory restitution.

The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security
Investigations Baltimore Division, with assistance from the Department of
Labor’s Wage and Hour Division, are investigating the case. Assistant United States Attorney, Ayn Ducao, is prosecuting the probe.

“An indictment is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed
innocent unless proven guilty,” the prosecution stated.

“If convicted of alien harboring, the defendant faces a maximum sentence
of ten years in prison.”

There are an estimated 19 000 Zimbabwean-born Americans.
